Diwali Fireworks in Fiji: Oldest Shop Navigates Rules and Rising Costs

Fiji’s Diwali Sparks: Oldest Fireworks Shop Navigates Rules and Rising Costs

As Diwali draws near, Mahesh Syndicate, one of the oldest firework retailers in Fiji, is poised to bring brightness to the festive season with a diverse array of fireworks. Despite facing increasing restrictions and economic hurdles, the store is set to offer over 50 distinct types of fireworks this year, including cakes, fountains, and sparklers, with a focus on budget-friendly options to accommodate varying consumer needs.

Vinay Kumar, the General Manager of Mahesh Syndicate, shared that the company has adapted to recent regulations by broadening the selection within each compliant category, ensuring customers have ample choices. The process of importing fireworks has grown more complicated in the post-COVID landscape, due to tighter international regulations on hazardous goods, which has led to the discontinuation of beloved items like woodpeckers and rockets.

While Mahesh Syndicate has taken significant steps to innovate within safety protocols, Kumar revealed that sales leading up to this year’s Diwali have not met expectations. The slowdown has been largely attributed to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, which influences consumer spending habits. “People are prioritizing essentials such as food and decorations before thinking about fireworks,” he noted.

With Diwali scheduled for next Tuesday, the store anticipates a busy weekend as shoppers make their final purchases. The company remains committed to providing high-quality and safer fireworks, having invested in improved packaging and careful product selection. Kumar expressed gratitude for the support of the Fijian government, which has permitted the sale of consumer fireworks in contrast to restrictions faced in other nations, including Australia.

As Mahesh Syndicate approaches its milestone 50th anniversary in 2026, it aims to continue its tradition of enhancing Diwali celebrations for future generations while focusing on safety and community involvement. This mission not only emphasizes the significance of tradition during the festive season but also uplifts the community’s spirit during challenging times, fostering togetherness and joy.
