The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has partnered with the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji to promote sustainability and responsible consumerism as part of this year’s Diwali celebrations. The initiative aims to reduce waste, encourage ethical consumption, and support fair trading practices during this festive period.
FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized that Diwali is not only a time of celebration but also a moment for introspection and renewal. She noted the potential of cultural festivities to drive positive changes for both individuals and the environment. The FCCC plans to oversee the pricing of essential goods like ghee, milk, and oil to ensure fairness and to caution traders against making unsupported claims about eco-friendliness.
The campaign encourages both households and businesses to cut down on single-use plastics, conserve resources such as energy and water, and buy locally-produced items, which in turn supports ethical trading practices. Dhirendra Nand, President of the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha, highlighted the spiritual connection to environmental care, urging Fijians to honor Diwali by being custodians of nature.
Responding to previous issues related to unethical business practices during the Diwali season, the collaboration between the two organizations calls on the public to celebrate mindfully, avoid waste, and support honest vendors. This initiative not only enhances the cultural significance of the festival but also envisions a sustainable future where community celebrations align with environmental stewardship. As communities unite during this joyous time, they have the opportunity to nurture the planet for generations to come, embodying the spirit of responsible consumerism and environmental care.
