Fiji's Real Democracy Returns, Kamikamica Hails Rabuka and the MIDA Repeal

Fiji’s Democracy Revival: Kamikamica Praises Rabuka as MIDA Repeal Reframes Politics

In a spirited defense of the People’s Alliance-led coalition government, former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica addressed Parliament, crediting Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s leadership for revitalizing genuine democracy in Fiji after nearly two decades of what he termed “democracy in name only.”

Kamikamica highlighted the coalition’s achievements since taking office in 2022, proclaiming, “We have brought back real democracy to Fiji.” He contrasted the current government with the previous FijiFirst administration, which he accused of creating an “atmosphere of fear” through restrictive media legislation. Under the prior regime, media freedom was significantly limited, with laws like the Media Industry Development Act (MIDA) instilling a climate of intimidation that hindered accurate reporting.

The former Deputy Prime Minister underscored the coalition’s swift actions in its early parliamentary sessions, such as repealing MIDA and abolishing discriminatory laws that affected women’s voting rights. He asserted, “We threw MIDA into the dustbin of history, where it belongs,” advocating for an inclusive political environment that amplifies the voices of all citizens, especially women.

Kamikamica’s comments reflect a broader commitment within the government to restore democracy and uphold fundamental rights for Fijians. He noted that the administration has proactively addressed numerous challenges, including outdated electoral laws and barriers impacting women’s political participation.

Moreover, Kamikamica’s statements align with a vision for a united Fiji that promotes collaboration among citizens to enhance progress and accountability. The government’s ongoing pursuit of transparency and democratic reform is pivotal in establishing a resilient political framework, nurturing hope for continuity and stability.

As Fiji strives to move forward, Kamikamica’s optimistic perspective serves as a reminder of the possibilities for positive change, emphasizing a collective aspiration for a future characterized by trust, inclusivity, and mutual respect among all Fijians.
