In a promising enhancement for Fijian culture and tourism, the historic Arts Village of Pacific Harbour is poised for a remarkable transformation. The Damodar Group has officially initiated the first phase of the Damodar Arts Village redevelopment, unveiling three significant entertainment and cultural brands designed to rejuvenate Fiji’s tourism and cultural economy.
This ambitious project, a collaboration with Yatulau Company Limited, represents more than just physical improvements; it marks the renaissance of a cherished cultural landmark. Div Damodar, the Chief Executive of the Damodar Group, has articulated his enthusiasm for the redevelopment, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural heritage while seamlessly integrating modern elements suitable for the future. “The Arts Village, once a cherished part of Fijian childhood memories, is now being revitalized,” Damodar remarked.
With a total investment of $20 million, the redevelopment is anticipated to create around 40 jobs in its initial phase, with the potential to grow to approximately 150 positions in later stages. Damodar highlighted the collaborative nature of the project, which includes ongoing partnerships with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Tourism Fiji, and various local artists and performers, ensuring that the development remains authentic to its cultural roots.
Community involvement is a central tenet of this project, with local engagement woven into every aspect. Isoa Danavavana, Center Manager for the Damodar Arts Village, reaffirmed their commitment to incorporating the perspectives of local provinces, ensuring that the development mirrors the traditional customs and values of the area. A ceremonial sevusevu has been conducted to seek permission for the operation on local land, reflecting respect for the local community and its traditions.
Set to open next month, the renewed Damodar Arts Village aspires to offer visitors an immersive experience of iTaukei culture, tradition, and heritage. It aims to establish itself as a central hub for cultural expression and tourism in Fiji. This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to preserve and promote traditional practices while meeting contemporary tourism demands.
The transformation of the Arts Village is expected to serve as a springboard for restoring local pride and cultural identity while also signifying economic growth, job creation, and enhanced community bonds. As Fiji embraces its rich cultural heritage alongside modernization, there is a hopeful outlook on how these developments can cultivate a positive and sustainable future for both the local population and tourism industry.
