In an exciting development for Fijian culture and tourism, the historic Arts Village of Pacific Harbour is set to embark on a significant transformation. The Damodar Group has officially launched the first phase of the Damodar Arts Village redevelopment, introducing three key entertainment and cultural brands aimed at revitalizing Fiji’s tourism and cultural economy.
This innovative joint venture with Yatulau Company Limited is not just about physical renovations but signifies the rebirth of a beloved cultural landmark. Div Damodar, the Chief Executive of Damodar Group, expressed enthusiasm about this process, highlighting the importance of honoring the cultural heritage while integrating modern elements fit for the future. “The Arts Village, once a cherished part of Fijian childhood memories, is now being revitalized,” he said.
The total investment for this redevelopment amounts to $20 million, and the endeavor is expected to create approximately 40 jobs in the initial phase, with projections to increase to around 150 employees in subsequent phases. Damodar detailed the collaborative approach taken for the project, emphasizing ongoing partnerships with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Tourism Fiji, and numerous local artists and performers, ensuring that the development remains true to its roots.
The project has incorporated significant local input, with community engagement at its core. Isoa Danavavana, the Center Manager for the Damodar Arts Village, underscored their commitment to involving local provinces throughout this effort, ensuring the project reflects the traditional customs and values of the region. The approach includes conducting a sevusevu to seek permission to operate in the local land, affirming respect for the local community and its traditions.
Set to open next month, the revitalized Damodar Arts Village aims to provide visitors with a rich experience of iTaukei culture, tradition, and heritage, while also positioning itself as a central hub for cultural expression and tourism in Fiji.
