Employers in Fiji are being urged to exhibit compassion and flexibility as the country embarks on its recovery from the recent cyclone. Maritino Nemani, the Permanent Secretary for Employment, Productivity, and Industrial Relations, has pointed out that while some employees may return to their jobs without harm, a significant number have suffered severe losses, including their homes and means of income.

Nemani recommends that employers consider flexible work arrangements or provide necessary leave to support their staff during this difficult period. He highlighted the critical need to ensure that workplaces adhere to safety standards before resuming normal operations, in line with Occupational Health and Safety regulations. The safety of employees must remain a paramount concern, as workers should never be obligated to operate in unsafe conditions.

Emphasizing the importance of human resources, Nemani noted that while tangible assets such as buildings and equipment can be restored, the real strength of businesses and the nation lies in its people. The Ministry is dedicated to providing ongoing assistance to both workers and employers throughout this recovery phase, working to maintain fair treatment and secure working environments.
