The National Federation Party (NFP) leader, Professor Biman Prasad, has reiterated the challenges and strengths of being part of a coalition government. Speaking at a national convention in Labasa, Prof Prasad highlighted the complexities that come with coalition governance but emphasized that the relationship with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka remains robust.
Prof Prasad acknowledged that governing as part of a coalition with The People’s Alliance involves various challenges, primarily the need for compromise. He stressed the importance of respecting majority decisions, which aligns with democratic principles. This approach, he noted, is vital as it requires accepting decisions even if there are personal disagreements.
The NFP joined the coalition not for political power, but to help restore democratic principles that had been eroded by the previous administration. Prof Prasad articulated the party’s commitment to promoting freedom, democracy, and human rights—values that were compromised under former governance. He emphasized the party’s transformation into a truly multiracial entity, gaining significant support from Fiji’s iTaukei community, alongside its original Indo-Fijian support base.
He also expressed appreciation for the partnership with Prime Minister Rabuka, noting the value of constant communication and mutual respect, which is fundamental to the coalition’s dynamics. Highlighting the roles of NFP parliamentarians within the government, Prof Prasad pointed out that NFP ministers lead several critical ministries, further illustrating the party’s integral contributions and the mutual respect shared within the coalition.
The narrative echoes previous acknowledgments of the coalition’s complexity, with open dialogue and respect being continuous themes. Past experiences under a previous administration marked by distrust have motivated the coalition to rebuild trust within Fiji, aiming for a hopeful future featuring improved governance and national unity.
This dedication to democracy and collaboration among coalition partners presents a positive pathway for Fiji’s political landscape, aspiring to address the nation’s challenges and build a resilient future.
