The Fijian government is actively advancing its ocean management strategies with the launch of the Blue Prosperity Fiji initiative. At the unveiling of the Blue Prosperity Fiji Ocean Science Report in Suva, Jone Nakamocea, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, underscored the government’s dedication to empowering local communities to participate in sustainable ocean management. He highlighted the integration of traditional knowledge with scientific research as vital for the future of ocean conservation.
Nakamocea expressed appreciation for the essential role that local communities play in ocean protection and extended his gratitude to community leaders for their efforts. He reaffirmed Fiji’s ambitious objective to sustainably manage its entire ocean territory, with a target of fully protecting at least 30 percent of its waters by 2030. This objective is in line with the government’s ongoing initiatives, including the Blue Prosperity Fiji program, which prioritizes collaboration and scientific exploration.
The program also seeks to enhance Fiji’s blue economy, ensuring sustainable management of ocean ecosystems while delivering economic benefits to local residents. This initiative has received international backing, particularly through a partnership established with the US-based Waitt Institute, focusing on marine spatial planning and sustainable fisheries development.
Additionally, the Blue Prosperity Fiji initiative complements multiple conservation efforts, such as the Unlocking Blue Pacific Prosperity Project. This project aims to safeguard significant sections of Fiji’s marine environment through collaborations with global organizations, fostering both conservation and local economic development through sustainable practices.
The proactive measures taken by the Fijian government, in concert with local communities, illustrate a positive trajectory for maintaining marine ecosystem health while fostering economic resilience.
