The Ministry of Fisheries is intensifying initiatives to enhance aquaculture in Fiji’s Northern Division, focusing on farm visits, site evaluations, and technical assistance aimed at boosting local production. A recent visit by the Aquaculture Unit team to Bainikea highlighted the community’s eagerness to revive three old fish farming ponds. Following the inspections, the team provided recommendations on the necessary rehabilitation tasks before fish restocking can commence.
In Bua, Lomanikoro, the team assessed various farms belonging to local farmers and conducted soil and water retention tests to evaluate the suitability of the sites for aquaculture. A follow-up visit included further assessments of an existing pond, focusing on water quality and preparation. Moreover, to support ongoing farming activities, the team delivered prawn feed to farmer Ropate in Nadua, underscoring the continuous efforts to sustain aquaculture growth in the region.
These proactive measures contribute significantly to enhancing food security and fostering economic resilience among local communities. Past developments reflect the government’s broader commitment to sustainable aquaculture practices, which have already led to promising outcomes in other regions. In particular, project initiatives across various settlements have shown growth in fish stocks and released fry that aim to improve local incomes and access to protein sources.
The Ministry of Fisheries reassures stakeholders that such initiatives align with national goals, promoting community empowerment and the health of the blue economy. With increasing collaboration and resource commitment, these actions are set to strengthen Fiji’s aquaculture sector, offering hope for sustainable development that benefits both present and future generations.
