The State is poised to significantly reduce the number of charges against former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and three other defendants related to breaches of civil aviation laws concerning the unauthorized transport of firearms on aircraft.

In a recent session at the High Court in Lautoka, Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Laisani Tabuakuro informed Justice Sunil Sharma that the current 66 charges are set to be reduced to approximately 30 counts. This strategic adjustment aims to streamline the legal process and ensure a timely trial schedule.

The defendants in question include Sayed-Khaiyum, former Fiji Airways executive Shaenaz Voss, Fiji Airways general manager Sharun Ali, and Fiji Airlines, which operates under Fiji Link. Last Friday marked their first court appearance following the transfer of the case from the Nadi Magistrate’s Court, with proceedings overseen by Justice Sharma.

The prosecution plans to file amended information by March 20, providing the defense sufficient time to comprehend the revised charges and associated evidence before a plea hearing scheduled for April. Tabuakuro expressed a hope that the trial could commence by August, aiming to resolve the case within the current year.

Both defense counsels, Gul Fatima for Sayed-Khaiyum and Wasu Pillay for Voss, have agreed to the adjournment of the case, though Fatima noted that specific trial dates will depend on the availability of all parties involved.

Justice Sharma has transferred the case file to Justice Aruna Aluthge for further action, setting the next court date for April 14 for the plea hearing. This procedural development marks a crucial step forward in this high-profile case, indicating a clear plan for resolution in the upcoming months. The legal system’s efficiency in moving forward with these proceedings reflects a commitment to ensuring justice is served in a timely manner.
