Fiji’s agriculture sector is rapidly becoming a significant driver of tourism, rural development, and economic resilience, highlighted during the 2025 National Agriculture Show. This event placed agritourism at the forefront, featuring traditional farming practices, organic produce, and authentic Fijian culinary experiences.

Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, underscored the strategic focus on smart farming, infrastructure advancement, and improved market accessibility as essential for enhancing rural incomes. This approach aligns with the coalition government’s broader vision to invest in climate-smart farming systems, promote value addition in agricultural products, and bolster market access, particularly for rural and maritime communities.

During the show, key discussions emphasized the necessity for organic policy reforms and the strengthening of agriculture-tourism links. Tunabuna encouraged a shift from subsistence to commercial farming, advocating for policy reviews to support high-performing farmers and proposed retaining top scientists and outsourcing certain services to boost efficiency.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, also stressed the importance of collaboration between the agriculture and tourism sectors. With nearly a million tourists visiting Fiji annually, there is an immense opportunity for local farmers to supply fresh produce directly to hotels and resorts, fostering a more integrated agro-tourism experience. Gavoka proposed initiatives like the Farm to Fork program to connect farmers with tourism operators, thus reducing economic leakage from food imports.

The show, themed “Be Resilient, Produce Smart, Go Local, and Grow Agro-Tourism,” showcased the dual focus on local agriculture and tourism experience enrichment. Such events highlight Fiji’s commitment to climate-smart agriculture, aiming for sustainable development that supports both sectors, ensuring food security and economic stability.
