At just 22 years old, Nedley Neha Nand has made significant strides in her life by graduating as a nurse, fueled by a deep sense of purpose and commitment to serving others. Last month, she celebrated this momentous occasion at Fiji National University during a ceremony at Vodafone Arena in Suva, symbolizing the culmination of her journey filled with resilience, faith, and community support.

Ms. Nand grew up in Naitonitoni, Navua, where her upbringing as the only child in a nurturing household has profoundly shaped her. “Being surrounded by love and encouragement made a huge difference in my life,” she reflected. Raised in a Christian home, she credits her upbringing with instilling essential values of discipline, humility, and compassion.

She describes her parents as champions of perseverance. Their unwavering dedication to their work instilled in her the belief that hard work and faith can lead to realizing one’s dreams. Her journey toward nursing commenced at Vashist Muni College, where she cultivated friendships and nurtured her leadership skills. A significant memory that stands out is the moment her father pinned a school prefect badge on her, a badge symbolizing pride and responsibility.

Although Ms. Nand originally dreamed of becoming a science teacher, her career direction shifted when her mother encouraged her to explore nursing. “My mother highlighted the meaningful impact of nurses, and as I delved deeper, I found true inspiration,” she explained. She came to view nursing not merely as a profession but as a calling—one that enables her to touch lives, instill hope, and nurture healing when others need it most.

Graduation day was an emotional event for Ms. Nand, serving as a tribute to her parents’ sacrifices and unwavering support. Looking to the future, she plans to specialize in mental health nursing, aiming to become a psychiatric/mental health nurse over the next five years. “My goal is to create safe and supportive environments for those navigating mental health challenges, helping them feel valued and empowered,” she shared.

Outside of her nursing aspirations, Ms. Nand finds comfort in music, considering it her refuge and a way to reconnect with herself. “Music allows me to de-stress and reflect on my journey.”

For those contemplating a path in nursing, Ms. Nand offers heartfelt advice: “Nursing will challenge, shape, and reward you in ways you can’t imagine. Let your compassion be your guide, embrace every learning opportunity, and remember that you are choosing a vocation that deeply affects lives and uplifts communities, especially in a beautiful setting like Fiji.”

Nedley Neha Nand’s story is a testament to the significant impact one individual can have within their community, radiating hope and care to those in need. Her journey not only highlights her personal achievements but also serves as an inspiration for future nurses who are destined to make a difference in the world.
