Fiji’s Coalition Government has demonstrated a robust legislative agenda in 2023, having introduced 84 bills in Parliament, according to Justice Minister and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga. This period marks one of the most significant legislative reforms in recent years, with 73 of those bills already enacted into law, signifying a strong commitment to modernizing Fiji’s legal framework and enhancing governance.
Minister Turaga emphasized that legislative review is more than an administrative task; it ensures that laws are attuned to the aspirations of the Fijian people. Notable laws passed this year include the Media Industry Development Repeal Act, which reinstates press freedom, the iTaukei Land Trust Amendment Act, designed to promote fairness for landowners, and the Employment Relations Amendment Act, which enhances worker protections.
In addition, Parliament has also advanced several structural and social reforms, such as the Child Care and Protection Bill, Justice Bill, and Truth and Reconciliation Bill. Turaga stated that these initiatives reflect Fiji’s dedication to transparency, inclusiveness, and national healing.
Looking ahead, Turaga confirmed that the highly-anticipated Referendum Bill will be tabled in December, underlining the government’s commitment to bolster Fiji’s democratic processes. This legislative activity is aimed at deepening citizen engagement and ensuring that the functioning of government is more reflective of the people’s needs.
