Former members of the 2006 Parliament are set to reconvene this weekend, led by ex-Speaker Pita Nacuva. The meeting aims to bring together those who served as members and senators in the House of Representatives during its brief tenure at the old Veiuto Parliament in Suva.
According to a press release from Nacuva’s team, the gathering is significant as all participants only held office for six months before being ousted from Parliament on December 6, 2006. Despite the considerable time that has passed since then, Mr. Nacuva emphasizes the importance of recognizing the constitutional roles played by these individuals during their tenure.
The event is envisioned not only as a chance to reunite but also to help restore the reputation of the 2006 Parliament and bring formal closure to a chapter in Fiji’s political history that has been marred by controversy. This meeting represents a hopeful move towards reconciliation and acknowledgment, allowing former members to reflect on their experiences and the impact of their short-lived governance.
