FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s team head coach Michael Walker exudes optimism as the squad gears up for the highly anticipated Dubai 7s tournament, the first leg of the HSBC 7s series. Following a recent participation in the Ignite 7s tournament in New Zealand, where they faced tough competitors such as New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, Walker is confident that the experience gained will greatly benefit the team.
Reflecting on their time at the Ignite 7s, Walker noted, “The Ignite 7s tournament in New Zealand was great. We got some good learnings out of that, so that was a good preparation tournament for us.” The Fijiana also showcased their skills at the Paradise 7s in Lautoka, and with just two weeks remaining for final preparations for the Dubai 7s, the team is focused on refining their strategies.
Walker is enthusiastic about the current roster, emphasizing the inclusion of fresh talents from the 15s and players identified through the Marama Cup, all competing for positions in the final lineup. “We have a good bunch of players… all vying for a spot in the final team,” he remarked, highlighting a competitive spirit that could boost their performance.
Last season, the Fijiana made significant strides, securing a top eight finish, an achievement they are eager to build upon. Walker stressed the importance of this progress not just for the team but for the nation as a whole, stating, “We needed to make the top eight, and we did that, so that was really good.”
As they approach the Dubai tournament, the Fijiana is well aware of the formidable competition, which includes teams like the USA, France, and New Zealand. Walker acknowledged, “We know the challenge ahead of us, so we are preparing a solid team for this tournament and hope to do our best.”
Scheduled for November 29-30, the Dubai 7s presents an opportunity for the Fijiana to commence the HSBC series on a victorious note. Walker is eager to see how their rigorous training translates into on-field performance, especially considering potential tactical adjustments from their rivals.
