Fiji Airways Fijiana head coach Richard Walker has emphasized the need for improved performance following a tough start at the Perth 7s tournament, where the team encountered consecutive losses in the pool stage. Walker pinpointed key areas requiring enhancement, notably kickoffs, offloads, and ball presentation.

In their opening match against the United States, the Fijiana lost 34-15 despite an initial lead from Reapi Ulunisau’s try during a moment when the USA was briefly down a player. However, the American team quickly regained their composure, with quick tries from Ariana Ramsey and Susan Adegoke before halftime. Though Ulunisau and Kolora Lomani added to the Fijiana’s score, late attempts from the USA clinched their victory.

The Fijiana faced further challenges in their second pool match against New Zealand, suffering a heavier 36-5 defeat. The team struggled to find their pace, enduring over 13 minutes without a score and making crucial errors against the formidable New Zealand defense. Captain Verenaisi Ditavutu managed to score in the closing moments, but it was not enough to secure a victory.

Despite these setbacks, Walker remains hopeful. He believes that targeted training and improvement in fundamental skills can lead to better outcomes in the remaining matches. His confidence in the team’s potential underscores the possibility of a turnaround, encouraging players to focus on their development as they strive for success in upcoming competitions. The spirit of resilience and determination shown by the team may pave the way for a brighter future in the tournament.
