FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s team head coach Michael Walker is expressing optimism as the team prepares for the upcoming Dubai 7s tournament, marking the inaugural leg of the HSBC 7s series. Following a recent stint at the Ignite 7s tournament in New Zealand, where they played against notable teams such as New Zealand, Australia, and Japan, Walker believes the experience gained will be beneficial for the squad.
In reflecting on the Ignite 7s, Walker stated, “The Ignite 7s tournament in New Zealand was great. We got some good learnings out of that, so that was a good preparation tournament for us.” Additionally, the Fijiana squad participated in the Paradise 7s in Lautoka, and with just two weeks left for final preparations ahead of the Dubai 7s, they are focused on solidifying their strategy.
Walker shared enthusiasm regarding the roster, highlighting new talents from the 15s and players identified through the Marama Cup, all contending for spots in the final lineup. “We have a good bunch of players… all vying for a spot in the final team,” he said, indicating a robust competitive spirit within the squad.
Last season, the Fijiana achieved a commendable top eight finish, an achievement they aim to build on. Walker emphasized the importance of this progress, not just for the team but for Fiji as a whole. “We needed to make the top eight, and we did that, so that was really good,” he added.
As they prepare for Dubai, the Fijiana recognizes the strength of their competitors, including USA, France, and New Zealand. Walker noted, “We know the challenge ahead of us, so we are preparing a solid team for this tournament and hope to do our best.”
With the Dubai 7s scheduled for November 29-30, the Fijiana team seeks to start the series on a high note. Walker is keen on observing how the rigorous training sessions translate into performance on the field, particularly in light of potential tactical changes among rival teams. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming tournament, fueled by the Fijiana’s blend of experienced players and emerging talent, fosters hope for impressive performances in the international arena.
