The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team faced a challenging tournament at the Perth 7s, concluding their pool games without a victory after losing to Japan 31-14. This marks the second consecutive year in which the women’s team has struggled to secure a win during the group stage in Perth.

The Fijiana began their campaign with two defeats against the USA and New Zealand, setting a tough precedent for their performance. In the match against Japan, the game quickly unfolded, with the Japanese team scoring their first try just 40 seconds in. Mere Vocevoce responded almost immediately, putting the Fijians on the scoreboard less than a minute later.

Japan continued to threaten Fiji’s defense, scoring again shortly after. However, Reapi Ulunisau assisted veteran Ana Maria Naimasi, which allowed the Fijians to briefly lead 14-12. Unfortunately, just before halftime, Japan managed to score another try and convert it, taking a 19-14 lead into the break.

Fiji’s chances diminished as indiscipline marred their efforts, leading to late-game dismissals for Vocevoce and Naimasi. This discipline issue ultimately allowed Japan to extend their lead with another try, sealing a definitive victory.

While the tournament has been difficult for the Fijiana team, it’s an opportunity for growth and reflection as they look to improve and regroup for future competitions. The lessons learned during this challenging experience may serve to strengthen their resolve moving forward.
