Private Temalesi Tinai has returned home from her first tour of duty, filled with a sense of belonging after more than a year away. As she stepped onto familiar ground, the warmth of her family embraced her, a feeling that had sustained her throughout her deployment with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).
Enlisting in the military in 2015, Private Tinai is a member of the Army’s Territorial Force. This week, she returned safely along with her colleagues after playing a pivotal role in peacekeeping efforts in Iraq. The emotional reunion was especially poignant as she embraced her two children, who had remained at home during her service to her country. The 33-year-old from Nabouva Village in Wainibuka, Tailevu, held her children close, cherishing every moment of their reunion.
Reflecting on her experiences, Private Tinai expressed her gratitude for the support of her family during her absence. “I learned a lot during this tour. I thank my family, especially my husband, for holding the fort for us as I went to serve in Iraq,” she said. The challenges of being a military mother were apparent, particularly the heart-wrenching decision to leave her daughter behind when she was just 18 months old. At the welcoming ceremony, she had to reacquaint herself with her daughter, who seemed indifferent at first—a reality that speaks to the emotional cost faced by many mothers serving in the military.
Despite the challenges, Private Tinai voiced her commitment to her duty: “As a mother, I’m supposed to be here helping raise my children, but when the military calls, we cannot say no because it’s our duty.” She emphasized the important role of peacekeeping and the need for understanding in difficult situations. “One thing about us Fijians working in war-torn nations like Iraq is that we bring a different sense of hope with how we handle situations.”
Now safely home, she is grateful for the protection she received during her deployment and looks forward to reestablishing her bond with her daughter and cherishing moments lost during her time away. “Being able to return and to see my family is a blessing, and I’m grateful for God’s protection every day,” she remarked.
Private Tinai’s story is a testament to the sacrifices made by military personnel, particularly women, who balance their commitment to service with their roles as mothers. As she embarks on this new chapter, her experience serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength displayed by those who serve in the name of peace.
