Fiji’s renowned Fijian Flying Circus is preparing for its inaugural tour of New Zealand in 2026, with the support of the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand High Commission in Suva. This exciting announcement was made in Suva by New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Charlotte Darlow, alongside performers from VOU and Director Sachiko Soro.
The vibrant Fijian Flying Circus, known for its innovative blend of contemporary dance, circus skills, and Pacific narratives, will take center stage at two major arts events in New Zealand. First, the troupe will perform at the Wellington Fringe Festival from February 17 to 21, followed by a headline performance at the Hamilton Arts Festival on February 27 and 28.
Darlow expressed New Zealand’s pride in supporting a performance that highlights Fiji’s artistic excellence. She shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this show with my family and I know New Zealand audiences are going to love it. It’s a privilege to support this level of Fijian creative excellence.”
Sachiko Soro emphasized the transformative impact of this partnership on Fiji’s arts sector. She described the support from New Zealand as akin to having a big brother or sister encouraging them, which is crucial for developing sustainable opportunities for Fijian artists. All performers in the Fijian Flying Circus are full-time artists trained through VOU’s accredited Conservatorium of Dance, where they acquire skills in various aspects of production, including performance, lighting, sound, and costume design.
The Fijian Flying Circus aims to present a captivating showcase that embodies Pacific identity, unity, and creative strength, forging a deep connection with New Zealand and its Pacific diaspora. Their performances promise to be an inspiring celebration of culture and artistry that resonates with audiences far and wide.
