Genesis Stice, a linebacker for Kapolei High School, and Kekoa Koong, the starting quarterback at Mililani High School, are not only excelling on the field but also bringing their Fijian heritage into the spotlight.
Once teammates at Kapolei, Stice and Koong now compete as rivals. Despite representing different high schools, they share strong cultural connections, which they proudly showcase. Stice, who has maternal roots in Naqere Estate on Vanua Levu, introduced his team to the Fijian chant-prayer Noqu Masu, fostering unity and camaraderie before each game.
Koong, connected to Rotuma, plays a pivotal role as quarterback at Mililani High, one of Hawaii’s leading programs. His leadership and skill are complemented by his cultural heritage, which he brings to every match.
In a notable event, Kapolei High recently traveled to the East Coast to face St. John’s College High School. Their journey included a warm reception at the U.S. Capitol by Senator Brian Schatz. The visit gained attention when Stice led his team in singing Noqu Masu on the Capitol steps, which the senator proudly shared on social media.
