As the Fijian Drua prepares for its fifth season in Super Rugby Pacific, optimism runs high within the Fiji Rugby Union. Board Chair John Sanday highlighted the evolving partnership between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and the Drua, acknowledging steady progress while recognizing the potential for further growth in the collaboration.

The Drua has emerged as a vital component of Fiji’s rugby fabric, providing a professional arena for aspiring local talent to advance their careers. This includes opening doors to opportunities with the Flying Fijians national team, reinforcing the franchise’s significance in nurturing the next generation of players. Sanday acknowledged that though expectations are climbing, the structural framework governing the Drua influences the extent to which the FRU can engage.

Describing the franchise’s oversight, Sanday explained that Counter Ruck Limited manages the Drua, holding a shareholding of 49 percent for the FRU and 51 percent for the Fiji Government. This structure features a relationship agreement aimed at shielding Counter Ruck from external pressures, thereby ensuring the franchise’s autonomy, particularly during challenging times within Fiji Rugby.

Despite some limitations on external influence, Sanday reaffirmed the FRU’s unwavering support for the Drua, highlighting its crucial role in player development. “We support the franchise in whatever way we can, because it’s a pathway for our players and where they get some really seriously good exposure. It’s also a professional environment in which they can grow and develop,” he noted.

Furthermore, he pointed out the financial stability the franchise offers, enabling players to earn a more competitive income than what might usually be available. Sanday expressed his belief that, while improvements are always sought, the partnership between the FRU and the Drua will continue to produce fruitful outcomes.

The Drua will soon compete against the Brumbies next Saturday at 3:35 PM in Ba, with fans able to watch the live broadcast on FBC Sports. This upcoming match presents yet another chance for the franchise to display its talent and foster its development within the professional rugby landscape. With continued support and opportunity, the future looks promising for the Drua and its players.
