The Fijian Drua Academy is setting a new benchmark for developing young rugby talent in Fiji by selecting the nation’s most promising under-16 and under-17 players for next year’s development squads. Following an intensive scouting effort during the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby competitions, over 50 players from each age group have been chosen to join the program. These young athletes will undergo several rigorous phases, including medical evaluations, strength and conditioning assessments, physical testing, and technical coaching, before the final squad selections are made.
The Drua Academy, which launched last year and is led by Ben Takubu, is expanding its program to include both new under-16 talents and, for the first time, under-17 players. This expansion underscores the Academy’s dedication to identifying and nurturing young rugby talent throughout Fiji.
Out of an initial group of more than 250 players, 56 under-16s and 58 under-17s have been selected to advance. Ultimately, the number will be narrowed to 30 players per age group, each receiving contracts within the 2025–2026 Drua Academy Program. This strategic approach emphasizes not only the Academy’s commitment to youth development but also its vision for a sustainable pathway into professional rugby.
The establishment of the Drua Academy is a landmark achievement for rugby in Fiji, reflecting a broader commitment to building a supportive framework for emerging players. The program offers specialized skill training under the guidance of Drua coaches and high-performance staff, setting a standard for fostering athletic excellence. By focusing on a smaller pool of 30 players per group, the Academy ensures that training is concentrated and tailored.
This initiative not only enriches the current landscape of Fijian rugby but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes nationwide, highlighting Fiji’s depth of talent. The ongoing growth and success of the Drua Academy are expected to significantly influence the future of rugby, enhancing not just the local sports community but also potentially impacting the international scene. This program provides a hopeful vision for young Fijian athletes aspiring to advance their rugby careers.
