The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has unveiled its squad for the 2026 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season, signaling a notable shift in the team’s dynamics with the departure of long-time captain Meli Derenalagi. In a bid to highlight its commitment to local talent, the Drua has integrated four players from its Development program into full professional contracts. Isikeli Basiyalo, Aisea Nawai, Maika Tuitubou, and Kavaia Tagivetaua have now been elevated to the main squad, marking an important step in the Drua’s mission to cultivate the next generation of rugby players.
Head Coach Glen Jackson voiced his excitement about these new prospects, emphasizing that their elevation reflects the club’s vision for sustainable success through investment in player pathways. “The promotion of Kavaia, Maika, Basiyalo, and Nawai from Drua Development to the main squad is another cause for celebration. They’ve worked hard to earn these upgrades — it’s brilliant for them and bolsters our squad significantly,” Jackson noted.
The exit of Derenalagi marks the end of a significant chapter for the Drua. As an Olympic gold medalist in rugby sevens, Derenalagi was pivotal in shaping the team’s identity in the Super Rugby Pacific, playing a key part in securing the team’s competitive position in the global rugby arena.
Despite this transition, the formation of the 2026 squad boasts a wealth of experience, featuring 29 capped Flying Fijians and 13 players who have been with the team since its inaugural season in 2022. The addition of several new players strengthens the roster, including Flying Fijian lock Temo Mayanavanua from Northampton Saints, Super Rugby veteran Manasa Mataele, and former Wallaby halfback Issak Fines-Leleiwasa, who is eager to represent Fiji owing to his Tailevu heritage.
Jackson emphasized the ideal blend of seasoned experience and rising talent within the squad, positioning the Drua for competitive success while maintaining a long-term vision. With seven home matches scheduled for the upcoming season, including the historic first Super Rugby Pacific game in Ba, the team is looking to enhance its local presence. “Our players love playing at home in front of their families, friends, and the Drua Nation. To play in Ba for the first time ever will be truly special for the team,” Jackson shared.
As the new season looms, the Fijian Drua stands poised at an exciting juncture, balancing its rich heritage with the potential of fresh talent. Their dedication to nurturing homegrown players while welcoming seasoned recruits creates an optimistic outlook for their ambitions within Super Rugby Pacific. Fans can look forward to exhilarating rugby performances as the Drua embarks on this promising new era.
