Dr. Ratu Joji Malani, a renowned Fijian medical practitioner and Turaga na Gonesau, was honored with the Honorary Doctor of Science degree by the University of Otago in New Zealand last Saturday. This prestigious accolade is typically awarded to distinguished graduates and individuals who have made significant contributions to the university.
Surrounded by his family during the ceremony, Dr. Malani expressed pride in his alma mater, further enriching the occasion by gifting the university a portrait of the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, who also received an Honorary Doctorate from Otago.
With an impressive 43-year career in general medicine, specializing in gastroenterology, nephrology, and chest medicine, Dr. Malani started his journey in medicine after graduating with an MBCHB from the Otago Medical School. He later served as an assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Hawaii and eventually took on the role of Associate Professor of Medicine at the Fiji National University. Currently, he practices as a Consultant Physician and Nephrologist at Oceania Hospitals Pte Ltd in Suva.
Dr. Malani’s achievements highlight not only his personal dedication to medicine but also his commitment to advancing healthcare solutions in the Pacific region. His recognition by the University of Otago reflects the impact he has made both within the academic community and the medical field.
