Fiji lightweight boxer Mohamed Ali is set to make his debut in an international bout against New Zealand’s Sunny Morini tonight at the Stratum Construction ZEG Kings Boxing Promotion, held at the Vodafone Arena. Ali steps in as a last-minute replacement for Jese Ravudi, who withdrew earlier this week.
The 24-year-old Ali previously fought on February 22 against Mikaele Ravalaca for the vacant lightweight title at the Bluewater Boxing Promotion in Suva, where he experienced a second-round technical knockout (TKO) loss. Despite the disappointment, Ali has chosen to seize this new opportunity, stating he was approached with the offer on Monday and acknowledges the limited preparation time he has had.
“I’ll try my best, let’s see how long it goes. This will be my first international opponent, and I was called in last minute without any time for training,” he shared. Ali understands the challenge ahead, recognizing that Morini will also be bringing his best to the ring. Nevertheless, his determination shines through as he commits to giving a strong performance despite the circumstances.
When asked why he accepted the fight on such short notice, Ali expressed his eagerness not to pass up his first chance to contend for an overseas title. His readiness to step into the ring underlines the competitive spirit prevalent in the boxing scene in Fiji, a place that has nurtured several promising talents despite the challenges posed by short-notice fights.
Promoter Samir Khan has indicated that enhancing the local boxing culture is a priority, with strong ticket sales reflecting growing interest in the sport within the community. This event promises to not only showcase individual talent but also spotlight the potential for the future of boxing in Fiji, as boxing continues to gain momentum.
With the excitement building around tonight’s bout, Ali’s participation highlights both his resilience and the vibrant fighting spirit of Fijian boxers, aiming to make their mark on the international stage. As spectators gather to cheer on their athletes, anticipation swells for a night filled with thrilling competition.
