Women are making significant progress in the workforce as evidenced by the recent graduation of 48 female students from Pacific Polytech’s Tavua campus, who are entering trades and technical fields that have largely been male-dominated. The Gold Town Event Centre in Tavua hosted a ceremony celebrating the achievements of a total of 151 graduates, who were awarded their National Certificate Level 3 in various disciplines such as Automotive Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical Fitter Mechanic, and Information Technology.
Alitia Bainivalu, Fiji’s Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, highlighted the significance of these milestones, emphasizing that skill and competence are not determined by gender. She referred to the graduates as trailblazers, recognizing their contributions in sectors such as Automotive Electrical and Electronics and Plumbing & Sheet Metal. Bainivalu commended these young women for breaking through barriers and showcasing that talent transcends gender limitations.
During her speech, Bainivalu motivated the graduates to pursue excellence while embodying integrity, character, and faith. She also encouraged them to maintain a balance between their ambitions and family life, while respecting Fijian cultural values and contributing positively to the nation. This event marks a pivotal moment in promoting gender equality in the workforce, showcasing the invaluable potential of women across a variety of professional fields. The achievements of these graduates not only enhance diversity in traditionally male sectors but also inspire future generations of women to seek careers in all areas of expertise.
