Fiji has celebrated a notable achievement at the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), successfully reaching a consensus on its resolution titled “Accelerating Global Action to Promote the Climate Resilience of Coral Reefs.” This landmark decision represents the first of 17 resolutions under discussion to receive endorsement from Member States, highlighting Fiji’s significant role in fostering global ocean and climate initiatives.
The road to this success was fraught with intense negotiations, as delegates engaged in lengthy discussions lasting into the night over the past week. Fiji’s delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary for Environment and the Director of Environment, skillfully maneuvered through a variety of scientific, environmental, and geopolitical obstacles to achieve this consensus. The final session wrapped up at 1 AM, with delegates unanimously agreeing on the comprehensive resolution.
With just three days left in UNEA-7, discussions are ongoing regarding the remaining resolutions. Fiji has expressed its appreciation to all nations and partners for their collaboration and support throughout this challenging process.
This early success not only highlights Fiji’s leadership in global environmental diplomacy but also reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding fragile coral reef ecosystems and supporting the communities reliant on them. The passing of this resolution represents a hopeful advancement in the collective fight against climate change and a commitment to preserving marine biodiversity for future generations.
