In a heartwarming display of compassion, Sumindar Kaur and her late husband opened their home to Mataiasi Buli, a 37-year-old whose mother passed away in 2020. The couple, residents of Lautoka, Fiji, formed a unique bond with Mataiasi, who has now become like a son to Sumindar. “Now, he’s like my son,” she reflected, adding that her in-laws appreciated him because of his fluency in Hindi.
Sumindar, who tragically lost her husband in 2023, now runs a small canteen from her home with Mataiasi’s assistance. Their relationship blossomed years ago when Mataiasi’s family frequently visited Sumindar’s shop, a hub for their community, serving as a point of connection between an Indo-Fijian and an iTaukei family. “I would be in my shop, and Mataiasi’s family would come around because they were attached to us, especially his parents and sisters,” she recalled.
Now, as a widow, Sumindar values the companionship she shares with Mataiasi, particularly at a time when many elderly individuals often feel neglected. She expressed concern for the younger generation, noting, “Kids don’t bother about the family; they’re busy on their phones,” and emphasized how Mataiasi engages with her about her relatives and their connections, showcasing his thoughtfulness and care.
Living with vegetarian principles, Sumindar appreciates that Mataiasi shares her dietary preferences, further solidifying their bond. Despite her challenges, she refuses to rely on family for financial support, believing it better for individuals to strive for independence. “Sometimes, when I see people on the streets asking for money, I always think that it’s better for them to work in somebody’s house or sell vegetables at the market,” she asserted, advocating for self-sufficiency.
Mataiasi also expresses deep gratitude for Sumindar’s kindness, recognizing the significance of her nurturing nature and the genuine acceptance he has found in her home. Their relationship exemplifies how love and compassion can flourish despite societal divides, underscoring the themes of unity and resilience in their community.
This inspiring story of compassion and cultural connection serves as a reminder that genuine care transcends boundaries and emerges in the most unexpected relationships, offering hope and serving as a model for community spirit and support.
