After the death of her husband in 2023, Sumindar has taken on the responsibility of running a small canteen from her home with Mataiasi’s help. Their relationship blossomed over the years when Mataiasi’s family would frequently visit her shop, a vibrant community hub that fostered connections between their iTaukei and Indo-Fijian backgrounds. “I would be in my shop, and Mataiasi’s family would come around because they were attached to us,” Sumindar reminisced about those warm interactions.
