Fiji Weightlifting Eyes 2026 Commonwealth Games Qualification With Bold Totals Push

Weightlifting Fiji’s head coach, Henry Elder, remains optimistic despite challenges as the team revamps its focus following their participation in the Commonwealth Championships in India. Although athletes have shown progress, Elder emphasizes the importance of increasing their weightlifting totals by up to 20 kilos over the coming months to secure qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

After an intense year of international competitions, maintaining peak performance levels has been strenuous, compounded by financial constraints. Elder acknowledged the uphill battle, saying, “It’s going to be a big challenge, but I believe it’s possible. Our focus now is to push their totals by 10 to 20 kilos to keep them in the top eight.”

The forthcoming months are critical as athletes will undergo assessments, rehabilitation, and targeted training to address areas of improvement and prepare for the final stretch of qualification. Fiji’s weightlifting team has already competed in seven tournaments this year, including the Pacific Mini Games in Palau, which provided essential competitive experience.

While financial difficulties persist, Elder notes the team’s trust in divine support to achieve their aspirations. Only Taniela Rainibogi has secured his spot in the Commonwealth Games thus far, following his gold medal victory in the men’s 110kg category at the championships in India.

The other lifters, currently in the top eight rankings, must sustain their positions until the final qualifying event next May to secure their spots. This period marks another phase in Fiji’s journey of using strategic international competitions to enhance their athletes’ preparedness and is a testament to their dedication to nurturing talent and striving towards international weightlifting success.

Despite the hurdles, Weightlifting Fiji’s continued efforts and targeted improvements reflect a broader commitment to excellence in the sport. As the team braces for the challenges ahead, their steady progress and resilient spirit continue to inspire a hopeful outlook for future achievements on the global stage.
