Six weightlifting athletes from Fiji have embarked on a six-week training camp in Apia, Samoa, spearheaded by head coach Henry Elder. This intensive program marks an enthusiastic kickoff for the team as they gear up for the forthcoming 2026 sporting season.

Coach Elder highlighted the athletes’ eagerness for this opportunity, which aims to enhance their skills and overall experience in weightlifting. He remarked, “This training camp is for six weeks; it’s an intensive training camp,” reflecting the rigorous nature of the program.

In collaboration with Samoan athletes, the camp will also see participation from competitors from the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Zealand, and Australia. Elder pointed out that the main goal for the Fijian athletes is to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

“The team from Fiji will remain in Samoa for the longest duration, and the athletes attending this camp are all aiming to qualify for this year’s Commonwealth Games,” he shared, underscoring the dedication and commitment of the team to their aspirations.

Elder expressed optimism about the team’s potential and extended gratitude for the support received from governmental bodies, sponsors, and families. He noted that financial backing from the Government plays a crucial role in enabling participation in training camps like this one, while also appreciating the ongoing encouragement from supporters.

Having left for Samoa just yesterday, the Fijian team is full of enthusiasm and readiness to fully utilize this training camp, diligently working toward their weightlifting goals. The focus on teamwork and international cooperation during this training period is expected to yield positive outcomes as they pursue success on the Commonwealth level.
