As the Weightlifting Fiji National Championships approach this Saturday, athletes and coaches are ramping up their preparations, demonstrating their dedication to the sport even during the festive season. According to Weightlifting Fiji head coach Henry Elder, this commitment is essential given the intensity of the international competition Fiji will face.
“This year, our last training session is on the 31st of December. We will be training on Christmas Eve and on Boxing Day. We never stop. We continue to train. The grind has to continue,” Elder stated. This relentless work ethic highlights the athletes’ determination to excel, as they prepare to compete against some of the toughest teams globally at the upcoming World Cup.
Elder emphasized the significance of discipline and consistency in training, noting that Fiji’s lifters are set to face many Commonwealth and world champions within the Oceania region. “We are fighting against a lot of very tough international teams. It’s not easy for us,” he admitted.
The national championships taking place at the Rabuka Gym will not only showcase the top talent from across the country but will also serve as a critical evaluation point for selectors. As Fiji aims for strong performances in international competitions throughout the upcoming year, this event marks a pivotal moment in their journey.
The championships are expected to attract athletes from all corners of the nation, bringing the focus firmly back to performance and progress as Weightlifting Fiji works tirelessly to make an impact on the world stage. This ongoing dedication and hard work suggest a promising future for Fiji’s weightlifting athletes, as they continue to push boundaries and aim for excellence.
