In light of recent events, Sugar Industry Minister Charan Jeath Singh is contemplating involving military personnel to safeguard Fiji’s sugar mills, particularly in Lautoka and Labasa. This comes in response to a suspected arson incident at the Lautoka mill over the weekend. Minister Singh has discussed the situation with Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad and senior government officials, emphasizing the importance of the sugar industry to Fijians’ livelihoods. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces might be called upon to provide security given the industry’s critical role.
Minister Singh expressed concern about how a fire at the Lautoka mill could severely impact those who depend on it. He pointed out the persistence of a group acting out of selfish interests, attributing the alleged deliberate fire at the Rarawai mill in Ba to such activities. This group appears to be prioritizing personal agendas over the welfare of farmers, according to Singh.
Efforts to get comments from RFMF commander Major General Jone Kalouniwai were unsuccessful.
This consideration follows a similar incident at the Rarawai Mill, where operational disruptions were sparked by a fire, intensifying security measures.
