The Local Government and Housing Ministry of Fiji is exploring the potential of high-rise buildings as a solution to land scarcity while reviewing housing grants to enhance assistance for low-income families, according to Minister Maciu Nalumisa. Addressing questions about high-rise developments during the Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition 2025, Nalumisa acknowledged the significant costs associated with constructing taller buildings, stating, “The higher you go, the bigger the cost becomes.”
The Housing Authority of Fiji is currently considering various housing options, including a combination of single and row housing units. Additionally, the Public Rental Board has been tasked with evaluating the feasibility of high-rise, high-street buildings on land it owns in the capital city, Suva.
Moreover, Nalumisa indicated that the ministry is actively reviewing the housing grant system, with plans to provide enhanced support for families earning $30,000 or less, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. “The housing grant review is underway, and hopefully, once approved by Cabinet, it will assist our low-income families,” he said, expressing optimism about the potential benefits of increased funding.
These initiatives align with ongoing government efforts aimed at improving housing access and living standards for Fijians, especially those in informal settlements.
