Schools are being encouraged to permit students who are unhappy with their examination results to repeat their current grade, affording them an opportunity to enhance their academic performance. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has raised this point in light of reports that some educational institutions have declined such requests or have policies that hinder students from repeating a grade.
Amid concerns over declining examination results at specific levels last year, the Minister believes this initiative will provide crucial support for students and contribute to better academic outcomes. “I am urging schools not to turn away students who request to repeat, simply because they are slower academically,” Radrodro emphasized. He highlighted that the new policy is designed to ensure that students build a robust academic foundation before advancing to the next grade level.
The Minister further noted that this approach will empower teachers by enabling them to offer more individualized assistance and communication to students who may be struggling academically. Muniappa Goundar, General Secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, shared that the initiative is effective, citing past experiences that show students often see improved results when given the chance to re-sit their courses.
This policy not only helps students manage their schoolwork more effectively but also lays a solid groundwork for their future academic endeavors. Through such supportive measures, schools aim to create a more inclusive environment that considers the diverse needs of all students. This initiative is a hopeful step towards fostering resilience and academic success among students facing challenges.
