Fiji has been officially invited by the Israeli Government to consider deploying its soldiers to Gaza for peacekeeping roles amid ongoing conflict in the region. This announcement was made by Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, during the welcoming ceremony for the first battalion of the Fiji Infantry Regiment, which recently returned from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) at Black Rock Camp in Votualevu.

Minister Tikoduadua highlighted the gravity of the decision ahead, indicating it will not be an easy one for the Fijian Government, given the unfolding violence in the Israeli-Gaza conflict. He stipulated the need for thorough consideration before any commitments are made, saying, “This is something that Government will need to decide on. It’s not going to be an easy decision. If it happens, we have to stand firm and be prepared to go.”

While he made it clear that there are no guarantees regarding troop deployment, Tikoduadua expressed confidence in the capability and readiness of Fijian soldiers for such peacekeeping responsibilities. He encouraged the troops to take this time with their families to reconnect and appreciate their safe return home.

The Minister also took a moment to recognize the leaders and senior officers who commanded the UNAMI mission, underscoring the significant responsibilities they hold during overseas deployments. He stated, “As a leader, your greatest responsibility is to bring every soldier home alive and well,” expressing gratitude to commanders for their commitment to this duty.

This development not only showcases Fiji’s willingness to participate in international peacekeeping efforts but also reinforces the nation’s dedication to soldier welfare and community ties. The potential deployment underlines a proactive approach towards stabilizing global hotspots while ensuring the safety of Fijian service members remains a primary concern.
