President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalu emphasized the need for a solid constitutional foundation in Fiji, reflecting on the establishment of four different constitutions since 1970. Speaking at the 27th Attorney-General’s Conference in Nadi, he acknowledged the nation’s ongoing challenges and the importance of addressing these issues to prevent future political disruptions.
Ratu Naiqama urged attendees to reflect on whether they are merely managing the present or actively building a legacy that future generations would cherish. He underscored the conference as a crucial moment for introspection and analysis regarding the nation’s future.
The President highlighted the value of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which presents a platform for constructive dialogue among Fijians. This initiative aims to foster understanding and unity in rebuilding the nation, emphasizing the responsibility to get things right for upcoming generations.
He pointed out that the conference agenda is designed to tackle key contemporary challenges, specifically focusing on the electoral system and national institutions. He mentioned that the initial session would discuss the design of the electoral system as a critical aspect of democratic legitimacy.
Ratu Naiqama also noted the recent Supreme Court’s advisory opinion, which clarified the amendment process for the 2013 Constitution. He expressed that this clarification serves as a significant opportunity for Fiji to consider constitutional reforms within a transparent legal framework. He firmly believes that any proposed changes must stem from the will of the people, emphasizing the necessity for open and inclusive dialogue across the nation.
