Disability Voices Shape Fiji's Inclusive Weather Services

Fiji Weather Service Advances Disability-Inclusive Climate Information

The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS), in partnership with the Pacific Community (COSPPac), has successfully wrapped up a three-day workshop focused on enhancing disability-inclusive meteorological services. Hosted at Novotel Nadi, the event attracted a diverse array of stakeholders, prominently featuring representatives from Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), who provided critical insights into making weather and climate information more accessible for everyone.

During the workshop, participants engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at clarifying common goals, understanding the co-design process, and determining necessary accommodations for persons with disabilities. They collaborated to establish a fair framework for ongoing cooperation, ensuring that all voices are included in evolving inclusive meteorological services.

This workshop signifies a pivotal advancement in promoting disability inclusion within Fiji’s climate and weather services. By marrying various perspectives with their strategic initiatives, the FMS is resolute in its mission to empower individuals with disabilities, enabling them to access, interpret, and react to vital weather information. This proactive approach is crucial for bolstering community resilience and safety.

The FMS expressed heartfelt thanks to all participants, partners, and OPDs for their collaboration and commitment to fostering inclusivity. This workshop builds upon the Fiji Meteorological Service’s earlier initiatives aimed at enhancing disaster preparedness through innovative technology and collaborative training efforts. Such endeavors underline the organization’s dedication to safeguarding all members of the community amid the challenges posed by a changing climate.

In a promising move toward a more inclusive future, this initiative reflects Fiji’s overarching commitment to accessibility across various sectors. It complements similar recent efforts aimed at raising awareness and support for persons with disabilities in the context of climate change. By prioritizing inclusivity, Fiji is making significant strides toward a more equitable society that honors and elevates the rights and experiences of every individual.
