The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a crucial warning about the dangers of drink driving as the nation prepares to welcome the New Year. Recent statistics show a concerning increase in road accidents connected to alcohol consumption, with three pedestrians tragically losing their lives while under the influence. Additionally, from November to December alone, a staggering 261 drivers were arrested for driving while intoxicated.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa underscored the gravity of these figures, revealing that nine cases of driving under the influence have already been forwarded for show cause proceedings, with the prospect of more cases arising as the festive celebrations progress. He pointed out that behaviors like drink driving, speeding, and reckless actions can create lifelong repercussions for families and communities.
In a bid to enhance road safety, Rokosawa urged drivers to take proactive steps such as planning their journeys, designating sober drivers, and abstaining from alcohol before driving. He also reminded pedestrians to stay visible, use safe crossing points, and avoid walking while intoxicated. Furthermore, he emphasized that passengers hold a critical responsibility in refusing rides from drivers who are impaired.
The LTA’s message highlights that road safety is a shared duty, calling on everyone to celebrate responsibly and commit to the principle of “arrive alive” as they enter the New Year. This proactive approach aims to cultivate a safer environment for all road users, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and accountability on the roads. With collective effort, Fiji can work towards a safer future for its communities.
