During a recent discussion in Bua, Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad highlighted the importance of civil servants being notably responsive, especially to those residing in rural regions. His comments were prompted by concerns from local landowners regarding the service quality of the Ministry of Forestry officials stationed in Labasa. Professor Prasad asserted that Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and cabinet ministers have high expectations for civil servants, urging them to serve the populace diligently.
Professor Prasad recognized that while there have been lapses in service delivery from some government ministries, the overall commitment of ministers and civil servants remains steadfast in addressing the public’s needs. “We support the landowners’ view that we need to be very responsive, agile, and receptive to complaints and requests from our communities. It is the job of civil servants to do that,” he remarked.
Despite acknowledging occasional shortcomings, Prasad maintained that, generally, government officials promptly address public concerns, reflecting an ongoing effort to enhance public service delivery. His emphasis on civil servants’ responsiveness aligns with Prime Minister Rabuka’s broader vision of improving public services across Fiji. This vision focuses on fostering an environment where civil servants take proactive steps to pinpoint areas needing enhancement, particularly in essential sectors like education, public works, and healthcare.
This initiative underscores a commitment to fostering a culture of open communication and accountability within the civil service. By continually seeking feedback and addressing concerns, both the government and its civil servants aim to improve service standards, ultimately benefiting all citizens. The collaborative efforts and a proactive approach can lead to meaningful improvements, paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive societal framework. Professor Prasad’s remarks reflect government leaders’ dedication to creating a responsive and effective public service sector that meets its citizens’ diverse needs.
