Former Fiji Volleyball Referee Director Jerry Cakau has remarked on the notable development of volleyball in the country since he last officiated a match nearly thirteen years ago. Now working as a school teacher in Australia, Cakau returned to Fiji to take on the role of competitions director for the Rooster Chicken End-of-Year Volleyball Festival.
Observing the athletes during the ongoing event, Cakau expressed his appreciation for the heightened level of play, noting that today’s players demonstrate a more profound understanding of the game than in years past. “Reflecting on the last time I officiated a match here in Fiji, the growth in the sport is remarkable,” he said. “I was impressed by many aspects of today’s performances, and I look forward to tomorrow.”
Cakau emphasized that the quality of volleyball has significantly improved, crediting this progress to the ongoing development initiatives by Fiji Volleyball over the years. The participation of teams from locations as far as Macuata illustrates the sport’s rapid growth and increasing popularity across the nation.
The tournament, which is currently being held at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva, is scheduled to conclude tomorrow. This event symbolizes a promising future for volleyball in Fiji, as the community rallies to support and elevate the sport further. The enthusiasm surrounding the festival and the evident advancements in player skills undoubtedly set a positive tone for the future of volleyball in the region.
