Former Fiji Volleyball Referee Director Jerry Cakau has observed a remarkable evolution in the sport since his last officiated tournament nearly thirteen years ago. Currently a school teacher in Australia, Cakau was invited to serve as the competitions director for the Rooster Chicken End-of-Year Volleyball Festival.
Upon reviewing the players’ performances during the event, Cakau expressed his admiration for the elevated standard of play, highlighting that athletes today exhibit a deeper understanding of volleyball compared to previous years. “Just looking back to the last time I officiated a match here in Fiji, there has been so much growth in the sport and it’s really nice to see. I was impressed with many things I saw today, and I am really looking forward to tomorrow,” he stated.
Cakau pointed out the significant improvement in overall volleyball quality, attributing this progress to the dedicated development efforts of Fiji Volleyball over the years. He noted that the participation of teams from as distant as Macuata showcases the sport’s rapid expansion and popularity.
The tournament is currently taking place at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva and is set to conclude tomorrow, embodying a hopeful future for volleyball in Fiji as the community continues to engage and support the sport.
