Around 500 residents of the Naqiliso Settlement in Davuilevu are grappling with severe flooding issues, which they believe stem from drainage problems linked to cemetery extension works undertaken by the Fiji Corrections Service. Locals have reported that these construction activities have obstructed their main drainage system, resulting in stagnant, foul-smelling water around their homes and raising significant health and safety concerns.

Narayan Sami, a long-term resident of 25 years, noted that the situation has worsened in recent days due to heavy rainfall. “The water keeps rising and there is nowhere for it to go; it’s almost coming into the houses,” he shared. Sami voiced his apprehensions about the potential health hazards for children, who are expected to attend school amidst such unsanitary conditions.

Residents previously raised concerns regarding the cemetery’s encroachment on their properties and were promised that consultations would occur before any further actions were taken. “We are not against the cemetery extension, but they should build a proper drain first. Without drainage, how can the water be controlled?” Sami stressed. Regrettably, many community members feel their concerns have not been adequately addressed by the contractors involved in the project.

Another resident, minivan driver Sanjay Narayan, pointed out that the persistent flooding interferes with his livelihood, making it difficult to navigate the flooded streets without risking damage to his vehicle’s engine. This situation underscores the broader economic impact of the flooding on the local community.

The residents are urgently calling on authorities to implement an effective drainage system to relieve their distress and protect families in the area. While questions have been directed to the Fiji Corrections Service for an official response, no answers have been received thus far. As the community awaits action, there remains hope for swift resolutions that can restore normalcy to the lives of those affected.
