The residents of Nabouciwa Village in Tailevu have recently taken a significant step towards enhancing their resilience against natural disasters with the inauguration of two essential community projects valued at $101,652.84. These initiatives, which were commissioned by Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, aim to bolster the village’s preparedness for potential emergencies.
The government allocated $52,359.43 for the construction of a new Evacuation Centre and $49,293.41 for an Ablution Block. These new facilities will provide secure shelter, access to clean water, sanitation, and essential services for more than 34 households in the village. Notably, these projects were fully financed by the Ministry and involved collaboration between local construction company CCD Carpenters and the villagers, who contributed labor and local support.
Minister Ditoka expressed that these developments highlight the government’s commitment to improving disaster readiness and ensuring that rural communities are equipped with cyclone-resilient infrastructure. Lusia Mateni, a representative from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama of Nabouciwa, shared her gratitude for the new facilities, emphasizing how they replace an outdated hall built in 1972 that had suffered repeated storm damage over the years.
This initiative aligns with a broader trend observed in Fiji, where several villages, including Daku Village and Naivakacau, have recently unveiled similar evacuation centers and facilities aimed at improving disaster preparedness. These advancements reflect a commitment not only to provide adequate shelter during emergencies but also to foster community empowerment and safety in the face of increasing climate challenges.
