The village of Levuka-i-Daku on Matuku Island is taking proactive measures to monitor its youth studying in Viti Levu, focusing on preventing their involvement in drug-related activities amid a troubling rise in drug cases among young people. Taito Coriakula, president of the village development committee, has emphasized the importance of supporting educational pursuits and ensuring that children do not stray into illegal behaviors. He stated that any youth engaging in drug activities would be brought back to the village, underscoring the community’s commitment to upholding safety and traditional values.
“During our weekly meetings, we prioritize the well-being of our youth, as it’s critical to guarantee they stay on the right side of the law. Our plans are formulated to ensure they are focused on their educational goals. However, those who fail to meet their academic responsibilities may face a return to the village, funded by the committee,” Coriakula noted.
The focus on youth welfare is paramount, particularly as Levuka-i-Daku boasts over 200 young members—making it the most populated youth community across the seven islands of Matuku. Coriakula pointed out that a safer environment is crucial for cultivating cultural practices and community work, highlighting the integral role that these youths play in the village’s social structure.
