Hundreds of Fijians gathered at Albert Park, ushering in 2026 surrounded by family and friends, all united in their hopes for relief and renewal after a challenging year. As the final hours of 2025 ticked away, individuals from various backgrounds came together, with a shared wish for a peaceful and stable new year.

Among the attendees was 26-year-old Unaisi Yavala, who reflected on the financial hardships her family faced in the past year. “2025 had been a tough year for my family; it has been a struggling year, and it was very difficult for us,” she expressed. However, she found solace and renewed strength in celebrating the new year alongside her loved ones.

Mela Rabuatoka, a mother of three who traveled from New Caledonia to celebrate in Fiji, hopes this time will create a protective bubble for her children away from the political tensions they faced back home. “The kids are very happy to come here and spend time here. We always have a lot of troubles, so they were very happy to come here, and we thank God,” she revealed.

Lusia Tupua described 2025 as a year filled with ups and downs, yet one that ultimately strengthened her family’s bonds and reshaped their priorities. “2025 has actually been a challenge with ups and downs; we had some good times as well as some bad, but we came out strong in the end,” she shared. Lusia expressed hope for the upcoming year, wishing for less work and more time to connect with family as they grow.

For many who gathered, the focus of the evening was not merely on celebration, but rather on starting 2026 together with hope and unity. The shared experiences and aspirations highlight the resilience among families in Fiji, as they look toward a brighter future filled with stronger connections and renewed hope.
