Fiji’s Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo has announced significant advancements in water access through the use of innovative Airborne Electromagnetic (AEM) Survey technology. This initiative aims to identify underground water sources in remote and underserved regions, ensuring that more villages and settlements can enjoy clean and reliable water. Speaking at a recent meeting with the Bose ni Yasana o Ba, Vosarogo emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing water security challenges for communities not connected to the Fiji Water Authority’s supply network.
The minister highlighted the application of AEM technology as a transformative solution compared to traditional water mapping methods, which have been described as slow and labor-intensive. By employing this advanced technology, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources anticipates generating numerous drilling targets that can significantly enhance the country’s groundwater access efforts. With a current success rate of 80% in drilling operations, the ministry aims to elevate this figure to an impressive 90% as a result of implementing these modern techniques.
This innovative survey, which began last month with the support of Geoscience Australia, is particularly focused on priority regions in Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, where access to water has been challenging. Key areas in the survey include the Sigatoka Valley, Cuvu, Malomalo, and areas across Vanua Levu. By December 2025, it’s expected that the survey will pave the way for significant enhancements in water delivery methods.
Moreover, Vosarogo reassured the public that the government is deeply committed to listening to the communities and advocating comprehensive reforms to safeguard land and natural resources. He stated, “This Government is here for the people. We hear your voices, your challenges, and your aspirations,” underscoring a dedication to fostering better living conditions for future generations.
