Fiji has urgently called for immediate global action on climate change, emphasizing the severe impact of rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions that threaten the survival of its communities. At the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Geneva, Inia Seruiratu, Chair of the Small Island Development States (SIDS) Group, highlighted that the climate crisis is a current reality forcing people from their homes.
Seruiratu made it clear that the situation demands urgent action that goes beyond bureaucratic red tape and requires leaders with the political will to make tough decisions. He reported that six coastal communities have already been relocated due to climate threats, while another 42 communities are in line for relocation. This urgent plea for adaptation funding is critical for ensuring the survival of affected communities.
Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko added to the conversation by stressing the cultural and traditional ties that are at risk when indigenous Fijians are forced to move due to climate-related impacts. The fear surrounding such displacements is intensified by Fiji’s specific vulnerabilities, which include increased flooding, intense cyclones, and erosion of coastlines.
This call for action aligns with earlier warnings from other Fijian leaders, including the Deputy Prime Minister’s appeal for enhanced climate financing to facilitate relocation and adaptation initiatives. Fiji has already taken proactive steps, establishing the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund to tackle the challenges presented by climate mobility. The focus on building resilience and maintaining human dignity throughout these transitions remains a central theme of Fiji’s advocacy.
