The Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, has called for enhanced maritime surveillance around Fiji’s outer islands to address the rising concerns over drug trafficking. This urgent request was made during his inaugural Bose Vanua ko Lau since being installed as Tui Nayau, where he expressed alarm over unidentified vessels entering Lau waters, which pose threats to local communities.
Ratu Tevita emphasized the critical need for the government to intensify its efforts in monitoring maritime activities, stating, “In Lau, we are concerned about unidentified ships and yachts entering our waters.” He underscored that while drug trafficking and substance abuse are nationwide issues, solutions need to begin at the local level within families and communities. He advocated for stronger family ties, discipline, and moral guidance to restore the well-being of communities, which he believes are essential to combat these pressing issues.
The Tui Nayau pointed out that the social ramifications of drug abuse, including the spread of HIV, are also worrisome trends that need to be tackled at home. “We can only address these issues by strengthening family relationships. That is where discipline must begin,” he stated. He highlighted how the excessive consumption of kava often takes precedence over matters that could foster better community health and unity.
